“We just popped in and found good beer and good quality home made food in a very friendly pub. The Shepherd’s pie was particularly noteworthy, as was the lemon cheesecake. We came back a few days later for the live music (that starts after the food service finishes) and more great beer.”

Trip Advisor

Our beamed function room is free to hire and can be used for a special Christmas Season bash…

“We had a family group visit and they couldn’t have looked after us better. Special room upstairs then coffee in the snug. Great value, good food. Relaxed and friendly.”

Trip Advisor

Gather a group of people together or have an office party. Treat yourselves to a veritable Festive Feast.

Was going to go in a different pub just a short walk away but then saw The Royal Oak. Faultless pint of Abbott Ale, great food, and what a truly old quirky and historic place! The service was excellent and I have no hesitation in awarding 5 stars. Couldn’t fault our visit at all. Standard of food, not expensive, quality of my pint, and the pub interior. All practically perfect ! Well done to the owner.

Had a smashing Sunday lunch from the set menu with a couple or three pints of really nice beer. Choice of five (I think) local beers kept very well, friendly staff and very reasonably priced for the middle of York. Feels like a good local, not a tourist pub/restaurant.

The Royal Oak Restaurant in York

The Royal Oak is within short walking distance of York Minster Cathedral and thirty seconds from Monk Bar; the eastern gateway through the medieval city walls of York. Moreover, the pub is built on an old Viking road, long since lost.

We stumbled across the pub after a day of shopping around York. We were tired and had two hungry kids with us, we didn’t know what to expect but what a fabulously warm welcome as the owner and his staff found us a table for four and then promptly brought menus. Inside the pub is historical but quaint, warm and has gorgeous twinkly lights (always a winner for me!) it felt homely and is divided up into lots of rooms/areas so didn’t feel too busy. The food was great, the kids meals are huge and the quality was super. Me and the hubby shared some home cooked chips (absolutely gorgeous and home made), onion rings and garlic bread. The owner (I think) was really attentive and friendly to all of us including the kids which makes such a nice change. Genuinely one of the nicest places I have been, couldn’t have asked for anywhere nicer to round off our day. I would recommend this pub to couples and families alike.

Met up with friends and booked for lunch . Food was very good ,although it was Sunday I had the fish and chips instead of the roast and could not fault them . Landlord very friendly and talkative and even told us some ghost stories as it is said to be haunted , .Very good selection of malts ,would not hesitate to recommend and will return when in York again.

The History of the Royal Oak

Dating back to the 15th Century and situated on the ancient street of Goodramgate, there has been a structure on the site of the Royal Oak since Viking Times, and indeed the area sits within the original Roman Fortress built here nearly 2000 years ago.

At the Royal Oak our produce is locally sourced and brought in daily, for example our fish is sourced that morning from Whitby, and our bread baked on the day just yards from the pub. With such passion for our ingredients we’re confident you’ll be pleased with the end results – a delicious range of pub food with something for everyone at a fantastic price.

The History of the Goodramgate

Goodramgate was created in the Viking period, 1100 years ago as a street to connect the former eastern Roman gateway (where Kings Square is today) with the former northern Roman gateway (close to the current MonkBar gateway).

Originally called Gutherumgate it was named after a local warrior, although some people believe it was after King Guthrum, who was defeated by King Arthur. Today Goodramgate is home to a variety of shops and businesses including pubs, restaurants, tea rooms, choclatiers, jewellers and Yorks largest collection of charity shops.

The variety of the architecture on this street is amazing, spanning 700 years. Lady Row is the oldest row of houses in York dating back to 1316 and is one of the earliest examples in England of medieval houses, where the upper story jetties away from the lower portion.

The houses were built for Holy Trinity Church which is situated behind them in a beautifully secluded site. Take a look inside the church and marvel at a building which has remained more or less unaltered since the 18th century. It has no gas or electricity or running water. If you want to hear some of the stories behind this church or indeed Goodragamgates colourful history, particularly its relationship with nearby York Minster.
