The Royal Oak serves up really good food!

Met up with friends and booked for lunch . Food was very good ,although it was Sunday I had the fish and chips instead of the roast and could not fault them . Landlord very friendly and talkative and even told us some ghost stories as it is said to be haunted , .Very good selection of malts ,would not hesitate to recommend and will return when in York again.

The History of the Royal Oak

Dating back to the 15th Century and situated on the ancient street of Goodramgate, there has been a structure on the site of the Royal Oak since Viking Times, and indeed the area sits within the original Roman Fortress built here nearly 2000 years ago.

At the Royal Oak our produce is locally sourced and brought in daily, for example our fish is sourced that morning from Whitby, and our bread baked on the day just yards from the pub. With such passion for our ingredients we’re confident you’ll be pleased with the end results – a delicious range of pub food with something for everyone at a fantastic price.

The History of the Goodramgate

Goodramgate was created in the Viking period, 1100 years ago as a street to connect the former eastern Roman gateway (where Kings Square is today) with the former northern Roman gateway (close to the current MonkBar gateway).

Originally called Gutherumgate it was named after a local warrior, although some people believe it was after King Guthrum, who was defeated by King Arthur. Today Goodramgate is home to a variety of shops and businesses including pubs, restaurants, tea rooms, choclatiers, jewellers and Yorks largest collection of charity shops.

The variety of the architecture on this street is amazing, spanning 700 years. Lady Row is the oldest row of houses in York dating back to 1316 and is one of the earliest examples in England of medieval houses, where the upper story jetties away from the lower portion.

The houses were built for Holy Trinity Church which is situated behind them in a beautifully secluded site. Take a look inside the church and marvel at a building which has remained more or less unaltered since the 18th century. It has no gas or electricity or running water. If you want to hear some of the stories behind this church or indeed Goodragamgates colourful history, particularly its relationship with nearby York Minster.

We pride ourselves on the quality of our Real Ale

We have three permanent ales, these are:

best_bitter_theakstons_real_aleTheakston Best Bitter 3.8%

The definitive English Bitter. This fine golden-coloured beer has a full flavour that lingers pleasantly on the palate. With good bitter sweet balance, this beer has a subtle hop character described as citrus and spicy. It’s a refreshing and very satisfying pint – noted for the aroma of its Fuggle hops and the dry hopping of Bramling Cross to add to its characteristic Theakston aroma.

old_peculier_theakstons_real_aleTheakston Old Peculier 5.6%

The beer that made Masham famous – rich, dark and smooth tasting, with a character all of its own. Brewed using the traditional Fuggle hop, Old Peculier is our best known beer and has a large and enthusiastic following all over Britain and around the world.

abbot_ale_ real_aleAbbot Ale 5.0%

Abbot Ale is brewed for quality of the highest order. Abbot is an irresistible ale with masses of fruit characters, a malty richness and superb hop balance. It is brewed longer to a unique recipe, which makes it the full-flavoured, smooth and mature beer it is today.
