Here is a rough guide to roasting a Turkey if you insist on doing it yourself:

  1. Make a note of the weight of the turkey and then add a bit to it, if you plan to stuff your bird.
  2. Always preheat the oven first to a high heat.
  3. Put the turkey into your large roasting tray and rub it all over with a little butter and seasoning to taste.
  4. Surround with chopped carrots, onions or other root vegetables and finally cover with tinfoil and place in the oven.
  5. Turn the heat down to 180°c / 350°f / gas 4.
  6. Cooking time is about 20 minutes per 500g/1lb 2oz.

We called in here on a Rainy evening. A quick beverage prior to dinner. The Manager was top class…chatty and informative. The beer was excellent. A good range to imbibe.

“We just popped in and found good beer and good quality home made food in a very friendly pub. The Shepherd’s pie was particularly noteworthy, as was the lemon cheesecake. We came back a few days later for the live music (that starts after the food service finishes) and more great beer.”

“We had a family group visit and they couldn’t have looked after us better. Special room upstairs then coffee in the snug. Great value, good food. Relaxed and friendly.”

Gather a group of people together or have an office party. Treat yourselves to a veritable Festive Feast.

Was going to go in a different pub just a short walk away but then saw The Royal Oak. Faultless pint of Abbott Ale, great food, and what a truly old quirky and historic place! The service was excellent and I have no hesitation in awarding 5 stars. Couldn’t fault our visit at all. Standard of food, not expensive, quality of my pint, and the pub interior. All practically perfect ! Well done to the owner.

The Royal Oak Restaurant in York

The Royal Oak is within short walking distance of York Minster Cathedral and thirty seconds from Monk Bar; the eastern gateway through the medieval city walls of York. Moreover, the pub is built on an old Viking road, long since lost.

We stumbled across the pub after a day of shopping around York. We were tired and had two hungry kids with us, we didn’t know what to expect but what a fabulously warm welcome as the owner and his staff found us a table for four and then promptly brought menus. Inside the pub is historical but quaint, warm and has gorgeous twinkly lights (always a winner for me!) it felt homely and is divided up into lots of rooms/areas so didn’t feel too busy. The food was great, the kids meals are huge and the quality was super. Me and the hubby shared some home cooked chips (absolutely gorgeous and home made), onion rings and garlic bread. The owner (I think) was really attentive and friendly to all of us including the kids which makes such a nice change. Genuinely one of the nicest places I have been, couldn’t have asked for anywhere nicer to round off our day. I would recommend this pub to couples and families alike.

The perfect Sunday Roast #sundaylunch #york

The Sunday Roast is probably the meal that is closest to our hearts…

Sunday Lunch is a bit like Christmas Day, an occasion when family and friends gather together and eat and chat, relax and have fun.

fresh_produce

What about the cook?..

A good Sunday roast can be one of the hardest challenges for any kitchen. The traditional Sunday roast of  meat and veg, unlike restaurant style dishes, doesn’t involve over complicated or fancy techniques and sauces. There is nowhere to hide, everybody knows what a good Sunday Roast should taste like and if you make a mess of it everybody will know.

To deliver a consistent roast is a skill, a skill that our chef has mastered. He won’t tell us how he does it and he won’t tell us his secrets but we have been watching him…

roast_beef copy

Tips on cooking beef:

  1.  A fatty beef  joint creates lots of juices to baste the joint with and is excellent if mixed with your gravy.
  2.  If the joint is lean rub a little oil into it.
  3.  If you want to serve 6-8 people and you want to have some left over, you’ll need a piece weighing approximately 5-6 lb (2.25-2.75 kg).
  4.  Pre-heat the oven to gas mark 9, 475°F (240°C).
  5.  Put the meat into the oven turned down to gas mark 5, 375°F (190°C) and cook it for 15 minutes to the pound (450 g).
  6.  You can place your roast on a bed of onions or other root vegetables.
  7.  Season with salt and pepper, herbs, even sprigs rosemary, which can be removed before serving.
  8.  Always serve with a rich gravy and Yorkshire Puddings.

Yorkshire Pudding Recipe

You can’t beat a good Yorkshire Pudding with lashings of gravy…Yorkshire Pudding Recipe

At the Royal we are proud of our Yorkshire Puddings. Unfortunately our Chef refuses to to divulge his secret recipe so you will have to come and try one of his Sunday roasts, complete with his secret Yorkshires.

Basic Yorkshire Pudding Recipe

  • Heat a conventional oven to 230C. Drizzle a little sunflower oil evenly into 2 x 4 hole Yorkshire pudding tins and place in the oven to heat through until you can see the oil nearly bubble.
  • Make a batter of 140g plain flour poured into a bowl and beat in four eggs until you make a smooth mixture. Gradually add 200ml milk and beating the mix until it is completely lump free. Add a little  salt and pepper, then pour the batter into a jug.
  • Remove the hot tin from the oven and very carefully and evenly pour the batter into the holes. You have to take care as the batter might ‘spit’. Place the tins back in the oven for 20 to 25 minutes until you can see puddings have fluffed up and browned.
  • Serve with a good joint of meat and cover with a copious quantity of gravy.

We believe our chef  uses equal quantities of his ingredients with an egg weighing 2 oz. He won’t give us his recipe and we don’t know what the secret ingredients are so we are guessing…

The important things to remember are:

  • To have a hot oven.
  • Do not open the oven door till they are done, otherwise they will ‘drop’ and not puff up.
  • Always serve hot – with gravy.
