Here is a rough guide to roasting a Turkey if you insist on doing it yourself:

  1. Make a note of the weight of the turkey and then add a bit to it, if you plan to stuff your bird.
  2. Always preheat the oven first to a high heat.
  3. Put the turkey into your large roasting tray and rub it all over with a little butter and seasoning to taste.
  4. Surround with chopped carrots, onions or other root vegetables and finally cover with tinfoil and place in the oven.
  5. Turn the heat down to 180°c / 350°f / gas 4.
  6. Cooking time is about 20 minutes per 500g/1lb 2oz.

We called in here on a Rainy evening. A quick beverage prior to dinner. The Manager was top class…chatty and informative. The beer was excellent. A good range to imbibe.

Tips on making good burgers – or eat one of ours #burger #york #yorkshire #goodfood

burger

Here are our 4 top tips on making your own burger:

  1.  Always use fine quality minced meat
  2.  After adding your seasoning and herbs, add a fresh egg and mix in thoroughly, making sure the egg is distributed evenly throughout the minced meat
  3.  The mixture must be ‘sticky’.  If there is too much moisture in the mix when made into a burger, the burger will break up during cooking
  4.  Add flour to stiffen the mix if it is to ‘sloppy’. We use rice flour, this makes our burgers gluten free. The flour and egg help to bind the mixture, helping to create the perfect burger.

Thursday Night is Burger Night at The Royal Oak

All our burgers are made in our kitchen from freshly minced meat, specially prepared by our butcher. We only use rice flour in our burgers so without the bun they are gluten free.

Burger and a drink for £11.95

  1.  Homemade, seasoned lamb burger.
  2.  Homemade, seasoned beef burger.
  3.  Cajun chicken breast burger.
  4.  Freshly made falafel burger.
  5.  Holme Farm venison burger.

All served with our freshly fried chips, salad, mayonnaise and onion rings.

Choose from two delicious toppings from:

  1.  Cheese
  2.  Bacon
  3.  Caramelised Onions
  4.  Brie
  5.  Black Pudding
  6.  Fried Egg
  7.  Mushrooms.

Then choose a drink:

  1. Bottle of Hobgoblin
  2. Stowford Press
  3.  Budweiser
  4. Coca Cola
  5. Sprite

The Royal Oak serves up really good food!

Some of the choices on offer include beer-battered haddock and chips, homemade pie of the day and Scottish salmon fillet, as well as some dishes with international influences like the spicy Moroccan tagine, pasta and risotto. Why not head over to The Royal Oak on a Sunday and tuck into the traditional Sunday lunch? Located in the historic heart of York, this city centre pub is popular with tourists with its close proximity to a number of attractions. Book a table a get yourself down to Goodmangate for real ale, comforting cuisine and some good old Yorkshire hospitality!

We stumbled across the pub after a day of shopping around York. We were tired and had two hungry kids with us, we didn’t know what to expect but what a fabulously warm welcome as the owner and his staff found us a table for four and then promptly brought menus. Inside the pub is historical but quaint, warm and has gorgeous twinkly lights (always a winner for me!) it felt homely and is divided up into lots of rooms/areas so didn’t feel too busy. The food was great, the kids meals are huge and the quality was super. Me and the hubby shared some home cooked chips (absolutely gorgeous and home made), onion rings and garlic bread. The owner (I think) was really attentive and friendly to all of us including the kids which makes such a nice change. Genuinely one of the nicest places I have been, couldn’t have asked for anywhere nicer to round off our day. I would recommend this pub to couples and families alike.

Yorkshire Pudding Recipe

You can’t beat a good Yorkshire Pudding with lashings of gravy…Yorkshire Pudding Recipe

At the Royal we are proud of our Yorkshire Puddings. Unfortunately our Chef refuses to to divulge his secret recipe so you will have to come and try one of his Sunday roasts, complete with his secret Yorkshires.

Basic Yorkshire Pudding Recipe

  • Heat a conventional oven to 230C. Drizzle a little sunflower oil evenly into 2 x 4 hole Yorkshire pudding tins and place in the oven to heat through until you can see the oil nearly bubble.
  • Make a batter of 140g plain flour poured into a bowl and beat in four eggs until you make a smooth mixture. Gradually add 200ml milk and beating the mix until it is completely lump free. Add a little  salt and pepper, then pour the batter into a jug.
  • Remove the hot tin from the oven and very carefully and evenly pour the batter into the holes. You have to take care as the batter might ‘spit’. Place the tins back in the oven for 20 to 25 minutes until you can see puddings have fluffed up and browned.
  • Serve with a good joint of meat and cover with a copious quantity of gravy.

We believe our chef  uses equal quantities of his ingredients with an egg weighing 2 oz. He won’t give us his recipe and we don’t know what the secret ingredients are so we are guessing…

The important things to remember are:

  • To have a hot oven.
  • Do not open the oven door till they are done, otherwise they will ‘drop’ and not puff up.
  • Always serve hot – with gravy.

We came across this pub by chance as we were looking for another restaurants nearby. We arrived in York on a Sunday and initially didn’t think to have Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding for dinner but as we came across this pub and the pub pulled us in with their tempting Sunday Roast choices. They did not disappoint us. The pub was old but with character. The interior design was great and the atmosphere was buzzing. The food was wonderful with good portion and plenty of gravy. The other great things you need to look out for in a Yorkshire pub is the type of Ales they served. Yes, Ales drinkers will enjoy the Ales in this pub. I had two different guest Ales and both tasted brilliant in very different ways.
